WILLOWBROOK CHRISTIAN COMMUNITIES
Due to the increase in Legionnaire’s Disease cases in long-term care facilities in the Midwest, Willowbrook wished to develop a routine monitoring program for their three retirement communities. Each campus houses a variety of services, including independent living, assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing. L&A was selected to develop this program. The initial step was to understand the building and mechanical system configurations at all three communities through a review of facility plans and interviews with staff knowledgeable of the mechanical systems. The information obtained was used to develop site-specific sampling plans to characterize Legionella concentrations in potable and non- potable systems servicing each campus based on the types of systems present and the susceptibility of the occupants. L&A’s microbiologist completed the baseline sampling for all facilities. To allow Willowbrook to conduct subsequent testing, maintenance staff shadowed L&A so that they could be trained in sampling techniques and procedures. Upon receipt of satisfactory results, L&A conducted a Legionella Awareness program for residents and staff of Christian Village and Delaware Run. Today, L&A oversees the annual monitoring. In this role, we are responsible for preparing the sampling plan, assembling and delivering sampling kits, reviewing analytical data and preparing technical reports.
