L&A provides archaeological and historic architectural surveys including literature review, reconnaissance survey, assessment survey, mitigation, and 106 consultation.  L&A’s historians review the literature to determine the cultural resources reported in an area of interest.  Reconnaissance surveys are performed to locate cultural resources (archaeological or architectural) in an area.  An assessment survey is performed to evaluate those resources in terms of National Register Criteria, and mitigation is conducted to remove or document cultural resources in order to minimize the adverse effect to a significant cultural resource site.

Based assessment surveys findings, L&A can prepare National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) nominations.  The National Register nomination form will be completed based on archival research, an on-site property survey, and landowner interviews.

If the property is on or can be placed on the NRHP or a state register, the property owners or developers who are rehabilitating an income-producing property may be eligible for a 20 percent tax credit by obtaining a Rehabilitation Investment Tax Credit Certification.  L&A staff can complete the tax credit application and will consult with the project architect to ensure that the proposed rehabilitation follows the federal Standards for Rehabilitation.  L&A will be a liaison between the property owner and the State Historic Preservation Office, which reviews the certification application and submits it to the National Park Service.
