Lancaster Bypass
Lawhon and Associates, Inc. staff conducted portions of all three archaeological phases for the Lancaster Bypass Preferred Alignment (FAI-U.S. 22/U.S. 33-0.59/9.95; PID 12613) in Fairfield County, Ohio. Archaeological services for this project resulted in the over 1,000 inventoried sites, almost 30 site assessments, and 8 site mitigations. Services were provided over a number of years. Services included literature reviews, record searches, development of an historic context, field reconnaissance, plow zone and subsurface sampling, feature excavation, total station and GPS work, detailed field recordation, lithic and ceramic analysis, chronometric dating of collected samples, flotation of recovered samples and archaeobotanical analysis, and data analysis. Detailed reports were written for each stage of the project, which included National Register of Historic Places recommendations (Phase I and Phase II) and the results of the mitigation of portions of the site affected by the final project alignment (Phase III). Extensive consultation with project planners was essential in preserving portions of unaffected, intact resources and investigating additions to the alignment created by changes to the project.
